Recycle, reuse and no-waste. That's the attitude taken by some fashion designers of this generation – and perhaps, this could be the future of sustainable style.

Duran Lantink

He famously designed the “vagina trousers” for Janelle Monáe for her Pynk video, and he makes new garments (that are very fashion-forward) by combining luxury labels’ unwanted items such as deadstock to unsold items and unused fabric. Leftovers from Nike,  Hermès and Dries Van Noten have been used to make a single pair of shoes. “I’d cut up garments I found in her closet from as young as nine,” he says.
Cecily Cracroft-Eley

The young designer uses natural materials such as nzimbu shells, organic jute twine and bark cloth sourced from the forests of Uganda, where she spent her placement year. “I became obsessed with local, traditional crafts and the community aspect – it’s beautiful to see people working together,” she says.

Priya Ahluwalia

On a visit to Panipat in India and when working in high street fashion, made Ahluwalia want to utilise deadstock, the unused fabric and clothes made by brands. It’s a method she has practised since founding her label in 2017. She believes that “every industry needs to have a hard look at itself – I’m going to be a designer but I’m going to do it in the best way possible.”

Helen Kirkum

Kirkum is all about sneakers, and sneakerheads and art collectors are a fan of hers. Her design is trendy, fun and individualistic. She collaborates with charity shop Traid, collaging donated odd shoes with material scraps to make "new" trainers. “My aim is to give beauty back to what would otherwise be deemed useless,” she says.
